Time to Play Paparazzi the Mixx Way! Expose, Search and Share

Posted by Kerry on January 11th, 2008

Time to bare it all! (Wait! No! Put those back on—we’re talking about your Public Groups!) Starting today, all of your Public Groups will be listed on your profile page, making it easy for your Mixx groupies to see what you’re interested in and who you hang with. This feature defaults to “ON,” so if for some reason you don’t want your “Richard Simmons Fan Club” group to appear, just go to your “Edit Profile” page and deselect it along with any other groups you don’t want publicly viewable. Please note that your Private Groups are not affected by this change and will remain just that: Private.

Some other cool stuff we’re rolling out today:

We’ve improved search results so that results for tag searches will be more thorough and will include a “View All” button as well as an “Add to YourMixx” button.

In response to many, many Mixxer requests, you can now display a URL on your profile. So go ahead and promote yourself! Let us know who you are when you’re not Mixxing.

And finally, we’ve a fixed a few bugs in this release. We’d like to give big thanks and a shout out to cosmikdebris and mortalwind for spending some of their valuable time to help us squash a bug that prevented them from making friends with anyone on Mixx. If they can’t make friends now, well, that’s not us standing in their way anymore. We’d just be very, very sad for them.

Well, that’s it for this release, but here’s a peek at a few features we have in the pipeline:

  • Share This: An easier way to submit content to social bookmarking and social networking sites
  • More powerful and Social groups
  • The ability to send private messages
  • Tools to allow you to edit your submissons, comments and tags.

As always, we want to hear from you. And while declarations of your undying devotion are always welcome, we also want to know what changes, upgrades, new features, etc., you’d like to see. So use that Feedback link!

Want to add some flare to that feed?

Posted by Will on January 9th, 2008

Some (ok, most) of our Mixxers are way ahead of the curve when it comes to gadgets, widgets and cool little doodads. So it should come as no surprise that, not so long ago, one of you asked whether or not Mixx integrates with FeedBurner’s FeedFlare. Seems he wanted to add a little more, well, flare, to his feed. (Sorry, we couldn’t resist.) At that time the answer was No. But because we thought it was a great idea—and because we have the most amazing engineers who will do anything to be let out into the daylight every three weeks—we’re happy to say that, as of today, the answer is a resounding Yes!

So now all of you Mixxer bloggers out there can add a little Mixx pizzazz to your RSS Feed. FeedBurner has done an incredible job simplifying the process, but we’ll just run through it quickly so you can get that Mixx flare going as soon as possible.

  • Step 1: Log into your FeedBurner account. If you have multiple blogs that you burn through FeedBurner, choose the one that you want to spice up with a little Mixx.
  • Step 2: Once you’ve selected the feed (don’t worry, you can add more later), click on the “Optimize” tab at the top of the page (between the Analyze and Publicize tabs).
  • Step 3: On the left nav bar, you should see a link for FeedFlare under the Services header. Click this.
  • Step 4: In the middle of the page you’ll see a list of the official FeedFlare options. Scroll down until you see Mixx. There will be two check boxes next to Mixx: one for you to add the flare to your feed, the other for you to add the flare to your site.
  • Step 5: Since you want to add Mixx flare to your feed, check the box in the feed column. (Of course you can also add any other flare items here, too.) Next you’ll see a preview of what the flare will look like in your feed. You can grab each flare item and rearrange to your hearts content. Of course, if you’ll allow us to play art director for just a moment: Mixx should go first. It just looks better. Ahem.

Once you have it just right, scroll down and click “Save.” And that’s it!

Want to see it in action? Hop over to your feed page, which will look something like: http://feeds.feedburner.com/(your blog name), and at the bottom of each feed item you should see a link to “Add to Mixx.” Click on this to get to the Mixx content submission page—the URL of the blog post should be filled in for you—and then it’s just like a regular Mixx submission: Click “Continue” to go to the last step where you can modify the title, the description, add tags and categories, send it to YourGroups or add it to your public location. Then click “Submit” and you’re done. And this time we mean it.

Have fun and, as always, let us know what you think!

Mixxingbowl Avatar Competition

Posted by Kerry on January 8th, 2008

The guys over at the MixxingBowl started a contest to find the best avatars across 7 different categories. We can’t let them have all the fun, so we’re going to offer up prizes to the winners!

The winner in each category will get a wonderful new Mixx hat or Mixx t-shirt (their choice).

Here is a picture of Kori (of Mixx Feedback fame) modeling our awesome hats:

Here is a picture of our awesome t-shirts. Oh wait, they are still being created. But trust us, they will be cool, and they do look like our site :)

We’ll drop a note to the winners after they are announced to get shipping addresses, etc. In the meantime, shine up those avatars!!!

~Team Mixx

PS: Team Mixx is ineligible, so Kerry needs to stop talking about her icon, Kori needs to stop searching for her new icon and Will can stop posing for pictures in his office!
