Comments, Kudos and Community, Oh My

Posted by Will on August 7th, 2008

Mixxers are chatty people and getting chattier every day. And no, we’re not complaining, this is a good thing! So we’ve come up with a few new tricks for managing—and rewarding—comments. And of course, it wouldn’t be a Mixx release without a few other goodies, too. There’s a lot to talk about, so lets get to it:

Comments

  • Nested Comments
Nesting comments makes it easier to visually follow the conversation. If you’re not sure what that means, hop over to any story you’ve been following and take a look. Please note, nesting will only occur on conversation threads going forward.
  • Comment Following
Tired of talking but still want to listen? You already follow comment threads on items you submit and when you participate in the conversation, and now you can choose to follow a comment thread no matter who submits the story—even when you’re not posting your own thoughts. You can also choose to follow these other threads via email, via RSS or on a new page called Your Conversations (found under YourMixx in the red navigation bar), which shows you all the comment threads you’re interested in.
  • Kudos!
See a comment you think is especially insightful, humorous or intelligent? Then give it the Kudos it deserves! Every Mixxer will be given five Kudos per day to hand out—so use them wisely! The comment that gets the most Kudos will get the new Big Kudos badge for the day. Kudos Badge
  • Comment Blocking
Now whenever you choose to block a user (which stops them from Following you or sharing with you), their comments are also blocked out. You’ll see a placeholder that they’ve left a comment, but you won’t have to see the actual comment. Anywhere. On. The. Site. You’re welcome!
  • Comment During Submit
Now while you’re submitting that awesome content, you can add a note to let your fellow Mixxers know why you think it worthy of their attention!

Mixx Communities
We’ve made just a couple of tweaks to make Communities run more smoothly:

  • It’s now easier to submit content to your Community. While in your Community, clicking on the “Submit a Link” button will, by default, submit it to that Community. Yep, we’re all about saving you clicks!
  • The Community auto-import feature has been modified a bit to make sure that your Community is getting the best Mixx has to offer: Now only submissions with five votes or more will be auto-added to your Community.

Super Mixxer Endorsed
It isn’t news that the stories, photos and videos found throughout Mixx have come from thousands of different domains. Sometimes that one bit of content barely scratches the surface of what that domain has to offer. Other times, that one piece of content is, well, pretty much the only thing interesting about that particular domain. So now, we’re allowing our Super Mixxers to endorse domains—meaning that they think the content, all of the content, on that domain is worth reading, worth picking up the RSS feed for, worth visiting on a daily basis. Before you ask: NO! This does not impact the vote count or popularity of the particular story. It just gives you a bit of additional information to make your browsing more efficient. Look for this Super Mixxer Endorsed badge on story pages:

And the Spam Battle Continues
Spam, spam, beautiful spam. But only when it’s kept in the can. Terrible, no? We hear we should keep our day job. But anyway, we love it when the Mixx community helps keep things clean by reporting abuses and spam and we’d like to encourage more of that. So now you’re going to get an extra a bit o’ Karma when you report spam and we wind up removing what you’ve reported. The old “Reward for information leading to an arrest” type thing. With this release, we’re also making a few tweaks to the algorithms that determine popularity also with an eye on spam.

Kori, Will and Kerry were ecstatic that Joe and his crew were kind enough to enhance our spam-fighting tools. Not that anyone else is going to see it, but we wanted to give the team a shout-out for making our lives easier.

Another New Award!
Starting today, as you are surfing around, you might notice another new badge start showing up on your friend’s profiles—The Mixx Picks badge— . If one of your submissions is chosen by the Mixx staff to be highlighted in the Mixx Picks blog, then you’ll get a cool new spotlight badge to show off your killer submitting skills!

Well we think that’s enough for one day. Go check out all of the cool new features and let us know what you think!

Sure, I decide to scale back my participation for a bit cause I am too busy, and we finally get nested comments. Obviously you do not want me to leave :) Kudos, comment following and blocking are also fantastic additions. Yet another great update. Thanks a ton.

Some great improvements. I need an “opt out of being automatically added to MFA communities” check box for submissions though. From the SEO point of view my content is practically stolen by these “communities” and my legit submission or SEO 2.0 group does not show up anymore in Google.

    Excellent work!

Nested comments are a great addition, something that could (hopefully) encourage some more discussion…

I like the endorsement feature - kind of like a strong personal recommendation. Goes a long way. Thanks for continuing to make the community better and better!

I saw Mixx was down last night right before turning off the computer and knew an upgrade was on the way. I even remember some of the hints you guys dropped about what was coming … but this is just really awesome, and much better than what I figured I’d wake up to this morning.

Keep up the great work, gang. :-)

Now only submissions with five votes or more will be auto-added to your Community.

This is great. It should cut down on some of the spam I’ve been getting to my community.

Speaking of spam, is there any way to control the submissions sent in my GroupAdmin? I tried blocking it, but the system wouldn’t let me and on hindsight I think that would be too restrictive. But I’d like the ability to be able to control, through tags or keywords, what is auto-submitted to my community. Any thoughts on that?

Are you able to view all of the new submissions. It seems that only the long term, top members get noticed by anyone - including the editors

  18. Kerry added August 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 am

    @ Public Relations
First, Mixx doesn’t have any editors. The contents of the page are determined by the users of Mixx.

Second, all the new submissions can be viewed by going to the “recent” tab. If you want to see literally everything submitted to mixx, that would be the Recent tab under popular:

The way to remedy this is to do the following:
    Go to your Community.
Click on Community Management in the Navigation area
Click on Customize Content and Navigation

About 3/4 of the way down that page, you will see ”
    Add Content from Mixx

Remove some/any/all of the tags from there. That is what is driving the auto-submitting to your community.
