Things to Give Thanks For…

Posted by Kerry on November 25th, 2008

Here in the States, Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November. It’s a week of family, celebrations and giving thanks for all the good in your life. Here at Mixx, we’ve got a lot to be thankful for, but the main thing by far is our great group of Mixxers who have created such an awesome community.

In return, we like to give our Mixxers stuff to be thankful for.  We crunched real hard this week to finish up a few things before the long weekend (which we’re also thankful for!).

So without further ado, the new stuff:

Show All Voters: The last of our promised Mixxer requests, you will now see a “View all” link underneath the list of voters to enable you to see all the voters on a particular story, video or photo.

Skipping Polls: This is for those times when a poll question just doesn’t have your answer, but you don’t want to be asked it over and over again. Just click the “Skip” link and you can skip that poll, see the results and not be asked it again. In upcoming releases, we’ll start accepting user-suggested polls, get poll comments into the Your Conversations page, and take care of some other Mixxer suggestions.

Submit to Communities: We got a lot of great feedback on the new submit flow last week, and the one thing that still needed improving was the way you submit to your Communities.  Thus, we’ve made another tweak to the process to allow you to submit to Communities and their subcategories.

Mature Content: Although our Terms of Service are very clear on what we allow for submissions and what we don’t, we sometimes get reports about “racy” content on Mixx. As we evaluate whether this content is “safe for work” or “not safe for work,” it struck us that we should turn this determination over to our Mixxers. So today we’re introducing a “Mature Content” curtain. When something gets reported as mature, we’ll place it behind a curtain and then each Mixxer can choose to block Mature Content, see things on a one-by-one basis or choose to see all Mature Content. Remember, our Terms of Use remain unchanged—what was against the rules before remains against the rules now.

One last note before we go: recently the Internets brought our attention to a site called Newsified which was created by Luke Stevens. Newsified is a central location to get a birds-eye view of all the popular social sites. We noticed that Luke was missing one in particular though: us! We contacted Luke and he added Mixx to the list in record time. Newsified takes the latest content from 80 Mixx categories in a minimal, newspaper-style design. It provides users with another interesting way to see what’s new across all of Mixx. Check it out and thanks, Luke!

That’s it for now!  Have a Happy Thanksgiving week, or, if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s still a nice thought to give thanks for the good stuff you have in your life!

I’d still love to get some points for filling out the surveys. It seems like a couple could be sponsored. I’d definitely like some credit for filling them out!
