The Power of Positive Voting

Posted by Kerry on September 24th, 2009

Greetings Mixxers!

You may have noticed this morning that we did a quick update. In addition to doing more optimization work and laying some groundwork for future updates, we made a slight tweak to the voting buttons.

You’ll notice now that we’ve increased the size of the “vote for” button to be a nice, big can’t-resist-the-urge-to-click-it target. This should make it easier for you to recommend with a vote in favor of the great content you find on Mixx.

We reorganized the “vote against” button to sit with our “Report This” functionality.  According to our research, historically, less than 1% of the down votes cast on our site were on items that weren’t later removed as violations of our terms of use.  Therefore, we have tied the two together in a nice, easy manner.

Don’t worry, you can absolutely still vote against something and not report it as spam if that’s what you are looking for.

Our next update will contain two user-requested features that have been asked for for quite some time, so stay tuned!

Yeah uh guys, not sure how I feel about this.
First off, now there is no way to downvote spam. Guys with growth is gonna come BS. BS users especially. You’ll have to deal with them one by one. Your old core users who actually care about the community and the stuff that makes the front page has now become limited. It is going to take us even longer. We now have to go to the report function to cast a down vote? I personally think this is a bad move. How about a pop up on the downvote button, with options Spam, Crap, ETC.
To me this new feature is nothing more than a welcome mat to voting rings.
I don’t think this was a good idea. Making it harder to downvote the garbage is going to make the landing page look like crap.

    Still love you guys.

Have to disagree with Jay. I rarely down vote anything unless it is something I consider really nasty, which means it most likely should be reported rather than merely down voted. The percentages that Kerry quoted tell me that many other Mixxers think the same as I do.

As far as too much garbage ending up on the front page? One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure. Just attend any garage sale for proof of that.

I think this was a good move by Mixx’s admin. I would give you kudos, but you neglected to put a button for that on this blog.

That is good news, but what about the option for “mark as fighting words”.it would be nice to be able to unmark as fighting words.

    Mixx,

How very non-democratic of you. I think it’s a toothless move to take away the downvote option. I use it to help improve the quality of posts that come through Mixx. If a user asks me why I downvoted an article I tell them it’s my right as an objective observer to send the message that your link lacks craft.

I don’t expect you to change to policy or issue any threats but the direction your taking this site (if you value a user’s humble opinion) does not appeal to me.

    Thanks,

    Ktownowl

Not sure about this. The vote down button was doing pretty well where it was before. Vote for/against!
    see the simplicity here?

I think its good to controle spam as best as possible, but not take away the downvote option.
That way there is still some user control.
